How dangerous is severe dieting while pregnant?

BKHB asked:

Someone I know did this and it seems her baby is very slow in developing. At 21 months his not talking very much and seems pretty uncoordinated. Could there be a link between his development and the dieting? She didn’t want people to know she was pregnant before getting married and wanted to fit into the dress.

Yes… nutritional deficiencies can most certainly cause slow development. How terribly sad that someone would do such a thing…

how stupid of her! yes it can cause problems with the baby and she was very selfish to do something like that.

    That breaks my heart :(

    Look at it this way.

Think about the size of a sperm.

Then think of the size of a newborn baby.

All that happens in 40 weeks.

    That’s INSANE.

    It blows my mind.

Development is a critical time period.
It is NOT the time to be dieting, unless you are classified as morbidly obese, and even then, you should never be crash-dieting.

There’s no way to know if his developmental problems were caused by her poor choices, but I do hope if she has other children that someone talks some sense into her.

    :(

the last thing you want to do is diet when your pregnant. your baby is taking alot of what she is putting in her body and if she’s not getting enough nurishment, niether is her child.
